Dream Adventure!

"Hrmm : /"

submission: Dream Adventure!
date: October 26, 2009

I appreciate that it isn't Super Saiyan Sonic VS Cast of Naruto, but I still don't dig on unlicensed sprite usage. Still, that's not why I'm writing a review. The bit that got under my skin was that this is being hailed as clever and creative, whereas it's lifted - practically verbatim - from the surface story of Braid, a *truly* clever game in every respect. Not sure if this note will be met with "Nuh uh", or "Never heard of it", but it feels a bit too impeccable for me to be convinced otherwise. At the very least, your taste is in the right place.

[Frontier Psychiatrist]

"Very promising"

date: July 31, 2009

Animating very closely to the song's lyrics is actually a huge pet peeve of mine, but you still managed to keep things pretty interesting. I'm sure The Avalanches' screwed up, scratchy, sample-heavy style lent well to that. The subject matter was part topical, part-offbeat, without being 'rofl random purple monkey cheese', the way a lot of people would have ruined it.

Your animation has some sure room for improvement, but you're right on track for your age. You'll be a strong animator in due time. For now, you have what matters most during this creative development process - ideas. So all in all, while I wasn't blown away this time, it kept my interest and hinted at some real potential for you in the future. I'll try to keep a watch out for your stuff.

This Game is a Joke

"I don't like to leave negative reviews"

date: July 17, 2008

But this is shitty, even for a joke. You stuck some asian titties in a weakly programmed sandbox. I see what you were trying to do, as we were greeted with "THIS IS A JOKE YOU GUISEZ" pretty much anytime you had the opportunity to speak, but the execution lacked any creativity whatsoever. I'm not sure if you're familiar with "You Have to Burn the Rope", but it's a great example of a self-parodying submission done right.
That said, you've got the start of a platforming engine here, so maybe run with that and make an actual game. Knock off that lazy click interaction crap though, anyone and their dog can make buttons in Flash.

Lol, you say you don't like to leave negative reviews, yet your name is "NegativeONE". Lol, can you say " This username is a joke"? :P

I've seen this icon on the front page for a while and passed it by because I didn't know it was a Sherb joint. I just happened by it cos I wanted to put something on while I peeled an orange :P Fortunate for me because this piece came out great. Shame you have to deal with all the twits asking if it was necessary that you pursue your own creative vision at the cost of their virgin eyes. That's why ya gotta animate first for yourself, then for the crowd. I hope you think the same way because 3.91 does this sub no justice. 'Specially when so many halfassed video game flashes get top 50. Ah well. What can I say? Keep doin' what you're doin'. I look forward to whatever's next.

Backyard Buzzing

"Excellent idea, meh execution."

submission: Backyard Buzzing
date: October 9, 2007

The idea of different insects warring for control of territory seemed like it could be very exciting. Unfortunately, a lot of bad choices were made. Most of the insects you chose have pincers, stingers, etc. They're killers on their own plane. But instead they shoot missiles and bullets? What? It seems like a partial reskinning of a world war game. That aside, the game is verrry slow to progress. I must have been 10 minutes in and it still wouldn't let me buy even the second building. "Not enough experience" or something like that. Trust me, I've experienced selecting all my guys and clicking in the enemy area enough times. I can handle it. Also, if you didn't really create true pathfinding AI, it would probably have been wise not to include any V-shapes for them to get stuck in. Holding their hand around corners was annoying. Lastly, had to turn my volume completely off because the song seemed to be a 2 second loop of someone striking a hot water tank with a hammer. Extremely annoying. At 1.3 MB, you could have afforded something longer and less excruciating. Alright, so those are my criticisms and hopefully they can be taken constructively. The good things I can say? Again, the idea was a good one. The programming was mostly sound, aside from my aforementioned AI and progression issues. The art was quite good. Very clean and pleasing style. Just work out those kinks and you'll have a great game. Few are ambitious enough to create RTS's in Flash so you get kudos on that.

Super Wiggi-Ball!

"Not bad"

submission: Super Wiggi-Ball!
date: July 26, 2007

Pros:
-the branching 'next opponent' selection is neat, and allows for different replay each time
-not an overdone concept
-decent graphics
-lots of different characters and arenas
-I like games with a visible scope and end
Cons:
-Kind of overcomplicated. The D hit was useless. S took way too long to charge up for what it was worth. A key (which I think was mislabeled in the instructions) was the only good one.
-Lots of text just to conclude with "Oh, it's volleyball"
-Would have preferred the voices as you recorded them, rather than all that Flange Wah Phaser stuff.
Remarks:
-Not sure how to beat the final ninja without getting sudden death and then a lightning bolt.
-Might be too complicated for kids.
-Overall good. I stuck it out till the last level, which is not wildly common for me.
-See you in the lounge :P

:O

You're right. It was mislabled :P Fixed now (hopefully). I think everyone's underestimating the intelligence of kids, though :s

Tau'ri : Bedrock

"Great on a technical end, but a creative emulation"

submission: Tau'ri : Bedrock
date: March 15, 2007

I know you're gonna hear this more than once and almost definitely be frustrated by it, but this is basically Loco Roco. The idea is obviously derived, so a clear credit might have been more fair. That aside, having created this in Flash is very impressive. I was wondering when those renowned scripting skills of your would finally find their way into a finished game. The graphics aren't bad either, although the music and style also seem to borrow from Loco Roco. Overall a good game, but not as unique as the writeup would have lead me to believe. Again, still good.

Author's Response:

Actually, to be perfectly honest, i started interest in soft body engines due to Gish, i started on a game and gave up, and then when experimenting with mixing soft and rigid body physics i came up with this idea, i didn't actually know about LocoRoco till quite some time through the development

I was gonna ask if Armor had gotten back to you yet. I see it's been reskinned as a halloween game. At any rate, there's not much I can say that I didn't say in person, so congrats on a fun game and your first sponsorship.
